case study of deuteronomy 30:1-6
This information is taken from the course THE 710: OTT - Prophets, a graduate course in the Old Testament prophetic texts at Franciscan University of Steubenville. It was taught by Dr. John Bergsma, Spring of 2007.
In Deuteronomy we get an introduction, historical prologue, and then general covenant stipulations, then specific covenant stipulations, then instructions on storing the covenant document, then blessings and curses.
The lynchpin of the Old Testament foreshadowing of salvation history, the basic course of salvation history sees its start here. We get in the rest of the Old Testament blessings under David and Solomon. After that we get curses in the decline of the monoarchies (Israel and Judah) and then finally in the exile. Then we get repentance and return (though not complete). Then we get the promised circumcision of the heart - a supernatural act in which God intervenes. In Deut 10:16 he says "circumsize the foreskin of your heard and be no longer stubborn." None of us without God's grace we cannot love God with all our being. We cannot fulfil this without an intervention by God. The disciples preach under the power of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2, and the text states that they are cut to the heart. God has acted in such a way to change their interior being. "Then they shall again obey the voice of the Lord and blessings will come upon you" (Deut 8). This is Paul's theology when we get to the book of Romans - in one sense the law passes away (the curses are expiated by Christ and many of its cultic forms are fulfiled by Christ, this enables us to fulfil the essential part of the Lord "Hear oh Israel, the Lord your God is one God, you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength").
We see the sequence of the rest of salvation history in these 6 verses.
